A Day At the Museum With a Toddler

A Day At the MuseumToday Fern went to a museum for the first time. It was the Portland Children’s Museum…the perfect museum introductory for a one-year-old and filled with interesting people to see and fun activities to try. I was a little worried she might be too young for it and that there might not be anything appropriate for a child her age, but I was completely wrong.

Fern had a wonderful time and was hustling and bustling back and forth between all the exhibits. It was so fun to see her discovering new things and learning about her world.

Here are some of my favorite moments from the day…

    Arriving
Grammy and Fern obviously had to stop and pose for an obligatory photo here. I couldn't resist.
  • Climbing 2 of 13
    Climbing
We started out in the "Baby Garden" and while Fern liked having everything at her height and being able to freely clmb on things, this area made me realize that she really is less like a baby these days.
  • Water + Lights 3 of 13
    Water + Lights
This "water" table was definitely a favorite. Fern loves water and she loves lights so the two combined was like her own personal heaven.
  • Magnatiles + Light Table 4 of 13
    Magnatiles + Light Table
This was an area that induced awe from my little one. She loved these Magnatiles (*note: these are a wonderful manipulative for kids of a variety of ages. Expensive, but totally worth the cost) and had a "wow" look plastered across her face during the majority of our time spent here.
  • Storyland 5 of 13
    Storyland
The children's museum had a special exhibit going on that was focused on various children's stories and had a bunch of interactive activities pertaining to each book. "The Snowy Day" garnered a lot of her attention. As she walked in the snowy footprints, they made a "crunch, crunch" sound just like in the book which she definitely got a kick out of.
  • Abuela 6 of 13
    Abuela
Another photo opp of Fern and her Abuela next to the "Abuela" story exhibit.
  • Magnetic Fun 7 of 13
    Magnetic Fun
The biggest magnets Fern had ever seen! She is constantly pulling magnets off of our fridge and carrying them all over the house and that was her activity of choice at the Children's Museum as well, despite the fact that these particular magnets were jumbo sized.
  • If You Give a Mouse a Cookie 8 of 13
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Fern loved flipping through this book - and also trying to pull the mouse's cookies off the wall!
  • Ambulance Ride 9 of 13
    Ambulance Ride
Hopefully this is the only ambulance ride Fern will ever have to take. She loved being at the wheel and pushing all the buttons and lights.
  • Baby Love 10 of 13
    Baby Love
When we entered the room filled with dramatic play items I thought Fern was going to lose it with excitement over the plastic babies. We don't have any life-like baby dolls at home and she spent quite a long time carrying around the babies in this area and giving them lots of snuggles. It was really sweet.
  • Rock-A-Bye Baby 11 of 13
    Rock-A-Bye Baby
Climbing up in the "her sized" chair to rock her baby just like mama.
  • If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em! 12 of 13
If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em!
Trying to keep a dolly company by climbing into his cradle.
  • The End! 13 of 13
    The End!
A fun day was had by all and a good long nap was taken by Fern! We'll definitely be heading back the the Children's Museum soon!
