A Toddler and Her Dog: A One-Sided Love Story

Our daughter Fern LOVES our German Shepherd Marley. In fact, I’m pretty sure she’s way more into the dog than she is into either my husband or I. Basically Marley is the light of Fern’s life and nothing can cure a case of the grumps quite like a good round of watching her perform dog tricks. The only problem with this? The Love is a bit unrequited. It’s not that Marley isn’t good with Fern (she’s fantastic!) or that she doesn’t like her (at least not completely), but the level of love that Fern has for Marley is definitely not being reciprocated to the same degree from our dog’s perspective. Most of the time our dog is basically indifferent to the showering of affection that our toddler bestows on her. She is particularly unamused by Fern’s newest favorite thing: climbing on her like a horse. Just watch…
