April’s Instaparent of the Month: @Becs_82

I’m not sure when I started following Bec Stewart (aka @Becs_82) on Instagram, but I didn’t realize she was from Melbourne, Australia until I asked her to do this interview. I guess refering to herself as “mum” in her profile should have been a tip- off.

That’s one of the things that’s so cool about Instagram— you get a snapshot (or many snapshots) into parenthood all over the world.

Bec’s feed features mainly her two daughters, four-year-old Eliza and two-year-old Georgia, and I was automatically drawn to her photographs, having two little girls myself. Her photos, whether close-ups of her daughters or action shots taken when they aren’t looking, always stand out like bright rays of sunshine in my feed, with their incredible use of light and white space.

It’s also fun to look back through her feed and like so many moms on instagram, see how much her photography has evolved since she started.

Below are ten of my favorite pictures of hers along with ten interview questions.

  • How has instagram changed the way you take pictures? 1 of 10
How has instagram changed the way you take pictures?
When I initially started using instagram, I rarely took photos!  In the past year, I have been so inspired by all of the amazing photographers on Instagram that I now love keeping a photographic diary of our life. Kids grow so fast and I'm glad we will always have these moments to look back on. Instagram has taught me to appreciate the everyday moments that 12 months ago, I wouldn't have thought of capturing.
  • Is your feed a real time portrayal of your life or do you use it as more of a curated gallery? 2 of 10
Is your feed a real time portrayal of your life or do you use it as more of a curated gallery?
I would say that I definitely use it as more of a curated gallery showcasing my favourite family shots. Still of our day to day memories that I want to remember but mostly photos that I'm really proud of and want to share.
  • What’s your biggest tip for taking photos of kids? 3 of 10
What's your biggest tip for taking photos of kids?
I find that my photos work best if I don't get them to pose! The minute I ask them to smile, the spontaneous moment that I was hoping to capture has gone. Often I sneak up on them to take a shot and these are always my favorites.
  • Do you take pictures with your phone or a real camera? 4 of 10
Do you take pictures with your phone or a real camera?
My trusty Nikon barely leaves my side since my Instagram addiction began. There is the odd photo in my later shots that is an iPhone photo but my feed is primarily taken with my real camera.
  • Which instagram filter do you use the most? 5 of 10
Which instagram filter do you use the most?
When I first started using Instagram, I always struggled choosing between using the Valencia or Walden filters. As I've started taking my photography more seriously, I now only edit my photos in Adobe Photoshop. I find myself more addicted to it everyday!
  • What are your favorite photo editing apps? 6 of 10
What are your favorite photo editing apps?
When I was editing my photos on my iPhone, Snapseed and VSCO were my favourite go to apps.
  • Why have you stopped using the standard instagram square? What app do you use to crop your shots in the horizontal/vertical format? 7 of 10
Why have you stopped using the standard instagram square? What app do you use to crop your shots in the horizontal/vertical format?
I'm really conscious of how I frame a picture' when I'm taking a photo so when it comes to editing and sharing on Instagram, I just prefer them in the layout I imagined rather than cropping them to a square.  Initially, I only cropped horizontally or vertically to suit the odd photo but now I prefer the look of my feed this way. I use squaready to crop before uploading.
  • Do your photos exist anywhere other than your feed? 8 of 10
Do your photos exist anywhere other than your feed?
I have made a few photo books as gifts but tend to be a little hopeless when it comes to printing them out and displaying them at home. It's something that I'm working on!
  • Who is one of your favorite instagram feeds to follow? 9 of 10
Who is one of your favorite instagram feeds to follow?
I have so many feeds that I love to follow but one that really stands out to me is @corrieowens. Her feed is full of beautiful moments, lovely light and I smile whenever one of her photos pops up in my feed.  She really inspires me to keep taking photos of my family.
  • Do you ever wish you were in more of your photos? 10 of 10
Do you ever wish you were in more of your photos?
Yes! I will often jump in for a photo when my husband or Eliza takes the camera but I am definitely very aware of trying to be in the shots with my girls rather than always being the one behind the camera.
