Before we had our third child, our older kids were 5 and 7 years old. At 5 and 7 kids have learned to somewhat pick up after themselves, they can put clothes in hampers and can do simple chores. Then we had our Izaiah. Life with a baby was a bit crazy and then when he was 8 months I found out I was pregnant again. In 16 months we went from a family of 4 to a family of 6. Our house slowly began to show the increase in population and now that those last 2 babies are toddlers, our home can be destroyed in minutes.
I’ve never been one to want to maintain a sparkling clean house. A house that is sanitary, yes – but if there are toys out so be it. Back in the day, our kids were also in school. Having 2 kids at home all day is another reason I think our house is looking like hell. Add in little minds wanting to explore, wham – you have filth.
In an average day, I sweep the kitchen floor 3 times. In our new home we have laminate which is beautiful and durable but OMG it does NOT hide toddler crumbs like carpet can.
We have tried to maintain a food only in the kitchen rule, but that has become a laughable joke. While I know we have just moved into a new home and are only half-way unpacked – I am finding food EVERYWHERE. Walking into the master bathroom, I stepped on a cracker. Leaving the master bathroom for the master bedroom, I notice a cookie with little mouse bites perched ever so nicely on our side table that I didn’t put there. In my desk drawer I found the remains of a grill cheese sandwich. Under my toddlers bed, there was a bag of crushed gold fish. On the entertainment center, a half eaten cheese stick. MUST I GO ON? It’s disgusting.
I hate to lock the fridge. We totally need to put a latch on the pantry. But that just takes care of the food. The toys will still be thrown down the stairs. The wipes will still be picked out of the box. The clothes will be left wherever the toddlers want to leave them. And this mom will still be pulling her hair out.
Is there such thing as a clean house with toddlers? I’m thinking not!
