Do You Still Like Your Toddler's Name?

Our little buddy Bren

The Baby Name books. The lists of top baby names. The hours spent pouring over websites searching for just the right name for your little baby-to-be.

Naming a child is a big deal — I mean, they’ll be stuck with that name for life, right?

And let’s be honest, some of the names that people are coming up with now days are a little bit strange. Pilot Inspektor, Moon Unit, Moxie Crimefighter. Not that those are bad names necessarily, but they’re definitely out there.

So, I wonder, as their baby grows up and they have a couple of years of saying their child’s name under their belt, do any of these parents wish they had named their kid something else?

Do you still like the name that you picked for your toddler? Or do you maybe wish (not that you would ever say it out loud), that you’d chosen to name your child something else. I know sometimes I do.

My son’s name is Brenden. We love the name, and chose it because I really wanted to call him Bren. Not as his actual name, the way some people name their children Michael and call them Mike, or Katherine and call them Katie, but just as a sweet nickname for his friends and family that are close to him. The way people closest to me call me Em.

But, because we call him Bren so often, sometimes people get confused and think his name is Brennan, which is a name I also really like. And sometimes, I get this little pang in my stomach, like, oh — I kinda wish we would have named him Brennan.

And I think a for little bit about what it would be like if his name was Brennan and not Brenden…

And then it passes, just as quickly as is it came. And I realize that I am totally happy with and love the name that we gave him, I think it suits him well and will be a good name for him throughout his life.

Am I the only one that does this?

Do you still like the name you chose for your child, or do you ever wish you had named them something else? (Don’t worry, we won’t tell!)
