Green Cleaning With Your Toddler

By Emily |

We’ve been talking all about different ways to go green with your toddler at home, and I wanted to take the opportunity to dive into some of these topics a little bit more.  Last week we talked about choosing safe and natural bath products for our toddlers, and this week I wanted to cover green cleaning for your home.

Conventional cleaning products are made from toxic chemicals that get into our bodies, either by absorbing them through our skin, inhaling them from the air, or even through our mouth, especially for little ones who touch everything and then put their fingers in their mouth or even pick stuff up off the floor and eat it – my toddler’s not the only one who does that, right?

There are over 17,000 petrochemicals that are available for in home use in cleaning products, and 70% of those chemicals have not been tested for safety for human health or environmental exposure!

The other problem is that so many conventional cleaners don’t even list the ingredients on the package.  They may list the active/cleaning agent, but the rest of the concoction remains a mystery and yet you are spraying and using it all around your home. Take a look at a bottle of conventional cleaner and you’ll probably see a WARNING or CAUTION label – hazardous to humans and animals.  That is not something I want to be using around my kids!

But, we still want to have clean homes to keep our kids healthy and safe.  Fortunately there are tons of options out there for green, safe and natural cleaning. First I want to cover some of the best green cleaning products and brands that you can find at health food stores, online, and increasingly at big box retailers too.  Then tomorrow I’ll share the best ingredients for making your own homemade non-toxic cleaners.
