I'm Taking My Toddlers Skiing Despite My Better Judgement

snowboarder

What's the point? They'll give it up for snowboarding in 10 years anyway...

My husband and I may live in Southern California, but we’re not born Angelinos (few are). Our roots are in the Northeast — my husband grew up close to the border of Canada, so he’s no stranger to the slopes. I’ve had my slopey moments, but in the last decade (maybe two…yikes) my shooshing has been very limited. Obviously, for the last four years while I was either pregnant or saddled with an infant or two, there has been no skiing in our family.

But all that is about to end this weekend. Maybe. We’re going to visit some friends who live in a resort town, whose kids have been skiing since they were 18 months old.

You read that right.

Now, I know Ilana had her experience and does not recommend it, but my friend (a ski instructor) has convinced me that it’s fine to let them try, if they’re not afraid.

I guess that will be the key. Will they be interested in skiing at all? Skiing is an expensive sport, and I can’t see them wanting to do it for more than an hour or two.

Luckily, we can borrow all the gear from our friends so we won’t have to plunk down too much cash initially.

Have you taken your little people skiing? What was your experience? Did they love it or hate it? Was it worth your time and money, or was it a waste?
