Making Magic In The Everyday To RememberSelena Mills
Weeknights are like a hot-mess of unexpectedness. We never know what we’re going to get. I try to aim for organization, it truly is the answer to the best laid plans.
Having dinner on the table as soon as my kids get home for dinner, say, is a key component to keeping everyone in a good mood. I try to wrap up work early in order to do a majority of the kitchen prep to make this happen, but I don’t always win at that.
Which means embracing the crazy rather than letting it stress me out. Children under-foot, multi-tasking between demands, melt-downs, little ones who want my attention…not for me to be side-tracked by the stove. The dinner hour, and the time in the evening thereafter is known in many a family to be a three-ring circus.
So instead of doing more to keep everyone happy, I’m discovering that less is the way to go. Less complicated meals, less complicated activities. Staying home more and enjoying our space.
Engaging in simple, mind easing, soul-lifting activities like setting up a reading and music station outside on our balcony off of the dining room with lots of pillows, blankets, books and some instruments. Musicianship runs deep on the daddy person’s side of the family so we might as well tap into that more.
Last night we did something that we rarely do.
I handed Trev his guitar and gave Wyndham his mini and Abby a uke. The rest just happened. Lots of singing and jamming and dancing and smiles. Ear to ear smiles. Afterwards Trevor thanked me. Which took me back a bit.
He said, “thanks, that was really nice. It did my heart good to play (music) like that.”
So we’re going to do this simple activity more often. Mills family music night FTW! (I think we agreed on our lunch date today that Wyndham is ready to start guitar lessons. So yes, there will be lots of short movies of THAT action.)
Wander on over to my personal blog to check out the little movie story I made (using the Disney Story App – love that thing!) of our humble night of merriment. ***Spoiler alert*** Major cuteness does happen.
