My Toddler's First Bike RideEmily Malone
We’re here in Hilton Head this week – playing in the sun, throwing fist fulls of sand, and exploring the island. I used to come here as a kid, and one of my favorite things to do was ride bikes around the bike paths. As soon as we got here I started talking about wanting to take Cullen out for his first bike ride. Everyone told me I was nuts and that he would hate it, but I was determined.
I figured we’d go to the bike rental place and at least try them out. If he hated it, then clearly we wouldn’t force it. But I had high hopes. I figured our biggest obstacle was actually the helmet. He’s not a big fan of hats or other things on his head, but surprisingly enough – he didn’t even blink when I put the big clunky plastic piece on top of his head.
We ended up renting the type of bike seat that is on the back of the bike (rather than the kind you pull behind), and Cullen absolutely loves it. I opted not to get the pull-behind type because he hates his stroller, and I felt like this might create a similar type of reaction. He loves being up high and able to look around. He has been laughing and pointing out dogs and water as we bike around the island.
I’m already planning to look into getting a bike seat for our bikes when we get back to Seattle. We never ride them anymore since we always have a small one in tow. But now that I know he likes riding with us, this opens up so many new possibilities. It’s been so refreshing to bike all over the island and rarely get in our car. A girl could get used to this!
