This wasn’t Cullen’s first official Christmas, but it was his first trip to visit Santa. I’m not sure why we didn’t think to do it last year. Perhaps because he was just nine weeks old and I was struggling to even remember how to get dressed at that point. We also traveled for the holidays last year, and I never even considered trying to find a Santa while we were out of town.
Just a few days before Christmas, we headed out to our outdoor shopping center with everyone else in Seattle, and waited in a very cold line for about 40 minutes before meeting the man in red. Cullen has been a little clingy recently, and he’s starting to show some fear of strangers. I had a feeling he might not be too keen on Santa, but I figured we’d give it a shot.
We plopped him down in Santa’s lap, and the photographer started clicking away immediately. Good thing, too, since that little lip started quivering pretty much right away. He was able to catch a half-smile before the waterworks started, but he wasn’t exactly his happy smiling self. I don’t plan to be one of those moms that forces the Santa thing if the kids aren’t into it. I thought we’d give it a try this year, but if he ever openly protests we’ll skip it.
At least we have a very overpriced photo to commemorate his first trip to Santa! I’m going to stick it in a frame and put it on the mantle each year for Christmas. I’ll update the frame as we get new ones each year. A fun new family tradition!
