Our Insta-Month: So Long, September!

It was the final month of summer here in Seattle, and boy was it a good one! We were blessed with many sunny days, plenty of time outdoors, and a few good, gloomy days to help ease us slowly into fall. For my family, it was our last month as a group of three. October will bring us a new baby and a little brother for Cullen, so we soaked up these last bits of being parents of one as much as possible.

We had a last minute surprise visit from Grandpa mid-month, which was definitely the highlight. Low points included being 37 weeks pregnant and sick with a nasty sinus infection I am happy to say goodbye to that particular memory!

Another great month behind us, with so much fun just up ahead.  Here’s a look back at everything we were up to in September through Instagram!

Mr. Independent has pretty much rejected all sippy and straw cups these days, and prefers to have his own big boy cup that he drinks with "two hands." On this particular day, I treated the two of us to pizza by the slice at our local natural foods store, and Cullen wouldn't share a single sip of this coconut La Croix! Pretty fancy taste for an almost-two year old.

We met up with friends for a playdate in the park, and Cullen loved sharing this double stroller with his buddy, Allie. We aren't taking the plunge and investing in one ourselves just yet, but it's definitely something we'll consider maybe next summer? For now I think we'll be fine with the tandem stroller, or even just a single stroller with baby brother in a carrier or wrap.

Cullen and I both got nailed mid-month by a nasty bug. Sore throats, horrible sinus congestion, and a barking cough. We were both down and out for several days. In between naps and tissues, I tried to nourish us back to health with lots of green juices and smoothie, along with homemade soups. Being 37 weeks pregnant and sick should be illegal!

Cullen took his first cruise in one of those awesome race car carts last month. What the heck took me so long?

The highlight of our month was a surprise last-minute visit from Grandpa. He flew out for the weekend to come help us with some emergency house projects (no hot water - yikes!), and we had a wonderful time showing him our new house and enjoying one of the last sunny weekends of summer. Cullen is totally in love with him, and we both cried when we dropped him off at the airport on Monday morning.

During Grandpa's visit, we had to make a few trips to hardware stores in order to have all the tools and parts necessary to get the projects done. Cullen had an epic tantrum in the middle of Home Depot, and all I could do was stand there and wait for it to be over. Luckily it was like 8 AM and the store was virtually empty, but still not a fun parenting moment.

We spent a particularly rainy morning browsing some local shops, including a cute kids' boutique that had a play kitchen set up in the toy area. Cullen absolutely loves toy kitchens, so he would have been happy to spend his whole morning here. He loved this little wooden coffee maker, and kept talking about his "hot cup" all day long. He's actually getting a little kitchen for this birthday in a few weeks, and his grandma is getting him the coffee maker to go with it. Can't wait for him to see it all set up!

I hit full term 37 weeks— in the middle of the month. It felt like a big milestone to reach, and I feel grateful that for the most part this pregnancy has been easy. Second pregnancies are a whole other animal, as there is no time for napping, resting, or even doing much nesting. And as tired as I might be, I will always look back on this journey as a really special time that Cullen and I have shared.

    sept-22

With hearty vegetables like beets, kale, and juicy apples overflowing from the farmer's market tables this month, it was high time we pulled out our juicer. Cullen loved helping hand veggies to dad, and even slurped down a big glass of beet/carrot/apple juice!

    sept-23

With cooler temps and rain returning to Seattle this time of year, we have started watching the beloved trash truck from indoors now. Cullen still gets just as excited, and runs to the window any time he hears one drive past. What a goof!

  • September 24th 11 of 14
    sept-24

We savored some late September sunny days, and took what was most likely our last trip to the zoo together as just us to (at least for a while!). We have been to the zoo more times than I can count this summer, and it still remains Cullen's favorite spot in the city. We were blessed with perfect weather, lots of fun animal sightings, and a toddler in a great mood. It felt like a really special morning!

  • September 26th 12 of 14
    sept-26

Our week of good weather continued, and we were able to take a nice long walk along the waterfront trail all the way to one of our favorite Seattle parks. Cullen absolutely loves the Space Needle, so this was a big hit. He cried when we had to leave!

  • September 28th 13 of 14
    sept-28

We attempted Cullen's first movie, a 3D IMAX feature about airplanes. Perhaps a poor first movie choice he lasted sixty seconds.

  • September 30th 14 of 14
    sept-30

Despite having a little piano as well as a mini-guitar, Cullen hasn't shown too much musical interest other than dancing. This week, we had my mom's group at a friend's house where Cullen discovered her daughter's harmonica. It was love at first note. We definitely need one!
