Pretty Soon, Grammy Will Be Checking in on Foursquareilanawiles
Especially when you are constantly chasing a two-year-old.
Mazzy has always been my biggest photo muse so, of course, a large number of my photos are of her.
Last weekend, I was showing my mom (aka Grammy) some of my favorite shots of Mazzy on my phone.
Shot after shot, she looked on silently and then said with a sigh, a tear and maybe even a tiny violin playing on her shoulder, “Why don’t you ever send me any of these?”
This is an old story.
My mother, my father, my mother-in-law, my sister, my brother-in-law, and even my husband have all complained, since the day Mazzy was born, that I do an awful job keeping them up-to-date with photos of their precious granddaughter/niece/daughter.
But I keep a daily blog about all things Mazzy, for goodness sake!
Doesn’t matter. The family is not buying it. They want straight-up photos texted/emailed directly.
(Note: I tried a group photo text once and my dad’s reply autocorrected into a sentiment so inappropriate, I can’t even reprint it. That text went to about ten people and my father had to apologize. I never group texted photos again.)
Anyway, while sitting with my mother, I had an epiphany.
“Hand me your phone.”
Then I quickly downloaded Instagram, set up her account, followed myself and said— “Here you go. You now have your very own real-time window into Mazzy’s daily life.”
Over this past week, I have signed up my dad (Poppy), my sister, my brother-in-law and my very social media averse husband.
Whether they will start posting their own Instagrams is anyone’s guess. But right now they’ve each got the equivalent of a Mazzy photo stream updating constantly on their phones.
Now if only I could get my mother-in-law to buy a smart phone…
Here is a selection of my favorite Instagram photos. If you’d like to follow me, I would love it. I’m @mommyshorts.
Mazzy on her Bike 1 of 15Nothing says city kid like a bike, a sippy cup and sunglasses on the sidewalks of Manhattan
Touch the Leaves 2 of 15Sometimes the easiest way to get from A to B is on top of Daddy's shoulders. Mazzy always keeps her arm outstretched so she can touch the leaves of trees as she passes.
City Scape 3 of 15If you follow me on Instagram, you'll get lots of NYC shots amongst the kid shots. This one is of downtown Manhattan taken from the ferry to Governor's Island.
Mazzy & George 4 of 15Mazzy requested her friend Curious George (stuffed animal) to sit and watch Curious George (TV show) with her. Obviously.
Wide Open Space 5 of 15On our way to the playground on the West Side Highway, Mazzy spotted this open lot. Perfect for running. We never made it to the playground.
Popcorn Clouds 6 of 15I took this shot last week on my way to Arizona.
Girlie Girl 7 of 15Mazzy is usually somewhat of a tomboy— which is why I love this impossibly girlie shot taken on Mother's Day.
Mazzy in Wonderland 8 of 15This was taken at the Children's Park in the Central Park Zoo.
Mazzy Kicking Ass in Football 9 of 15As I said, she's a bit of a tomboy. She loves anything that involves a ball and takes no prisoners.
Me 10 of 15That's me showing off my new heat-free curl technique. Best thing going since the flat iron.
Daddy-led Bedtime Routine 11 of 15Incredibly cute but unfortunately— EXTREMELY RARE.
Madison Square Park 12 of 15I was freelancing in an office right off of Madison Square Park when these trees were in bloom.
iPad with Limits 13 of 15This is Mazzy using the iPad with the Time Timer. I highly recommend it.
Merry Go Round 14 of 15We were at a free carnival in Thompkins Square Park last weekend. Mazzy rode on this thing again and again.
Bear’s Day Out 15 of 15Mazzy would walk the stroller a bit and then stop every so often to ask Bear how he was doing. I think she learned that from me.
