What is it about a recession that makes our thoughts go to food? It seems that every time the Dow dips lower, a new batch of books, websites and articles rushes to the surface, telling us how to eat better, more thoughtfully, for less money. Maybe it's because food is universally comforting, and we all could use a big bowl of mac-and-cheese right about now. Or maybe it's because, when we're paring our family budgets down to just the essentials, food will always top the list.
