What is is about boys and balls? Having a girl first, I really didn’t realize how different having a son would be.
My son is obsessed with anything that has to do with sports and balls! Soccer, football, golf, baseball, basketball – give him a ball and he is a happy kid. Play ball with him, and you’ll be his best friend (and you won’t be able to get away because he never wants to stop!).
I am amazed daily at the athletic ability that my son is exhibiting at such a young age. He can catch a ball that is thrown to him. He can throw a great spiral. He can throw a ball in the air and hit it himself with his bat. He puts his golf ball on the tee, swings, and actually connects with the ball. He can kick a ball out of the air that is thrown to him. Not every single time of course, but still.
My daughter who is almost 2 years older can hardly do any of these things.
Part of is that she hasn’t had the practice that my son has, she wasn’t as interested in sports and didn’t want to always play and practice the way my son does. But he also picks things up naturally that she just doesn’t.
It’s fun to play with him, and see how excited he gets. Yesterday we even had a little game of baseball going on in our backyard. Brenden was the pitcher, I was the batter, and my daughter was the outfielder. We’re not quite ready for the major leagues, but it was a fun activity to enjoy outside together.
I don’t know if he’ll grow up to be a star athlete, but I love watching my son learn these new skills and playing along with him!
