The Search for Hair Accessories that Stay Put

By marylweimer |

After two boys, I looked forward to many things about having a daughter.

The sweet smocked dresses and floppy summer sun hats.

The pink footy pajamas and red Mary Janes.

The headbands and hair bows to match every outfit.

What I didn’t imagine, though, was daily battle to keep them in her hair.

My daughter has always enjoyed wearing barrettes and bows but it was a challenge to find ones that stayed put in her baby-fine hair. With some trial and error we’ve found some styles that work better for her hair type and the rough-and-tumble life of an active gal with two older brothers.

Here are ten of my favorite hair accessories…I hope you’ll like them too!

These are so cute! I’d love to buy them for Baguette, to keep her hair back from her face, but she won’t wear them. To her, it’s a game–Mommy puts a clip in and Baguette pulls it out and hands it to Mommy to put back in. And repeat.

I had always heard that putting headbands on babies and toddlers was a bad thing to do (as in it wasn’t good for their little heads, not in a fashion sense kind of way) so I never used them. I try to use clips now that my daughter is 3, but she usually pulls them out after a few minutes. The ones that I found that would stay in her hair are similar in shape to the ones here that are covered by the ribbons, only they are plastic with little teeth to grab the hair. They were a no name brand, and I only found them at Ocean State Job Lots. I can’t find any more there now so I’m SOL if she loses them all. (Did I mention that when she takes them out she usually drops them wherever she happens to be standing? Kitchen, living room, playground – we’re running out fast)
