This was our first week of toddler swim lessons! I signed up months ago, and our start date sort of crept up on me. Probably because the high temps in Seattle this week were around 70 or cooler—certainly very pleasant for play dates and strolling, but a little on the chilly side for splashing and air-drying. Regardless, we’ve been to two lessons so far and it’s been a lot of fun for both of us.
Cullen hasn’t been in a pool since last summer, so I wasn’t sure what he’d think. He took to the water quickly though, as I expected he would given his fondness for bath time. He has no interest in the instructors, kicking, or paddling, but instead prefers dunking, splashing, and doing his best to remove mom’s bathing suit.
One thing I didn’t expect is how much of a workout it would be for me! Even though he is technically “weightless” in water, my arms were burning from holding him away from my body for thirty minutes straight. Did I mention I am also 25 weeks pregnant? The bump has a life of its own, and I’m trying not to even think about what other people at the pool probably think of my giant belly in a swimsuit. Luckily most of them have been in my shoes at some point before.
We have an East Coast vacation coming up in a few weeks, and I’m glad Cullen will be familiar with the pool before we get there. I certainly don’t expect him to know how to swim, or really even be close to it, but the point is just to make him comfortable in the water. I’m on the hunt for a new bathing suit before next week’s lessons—preferably one that a toddler can’t remove quite so easily!
