Here is a picture of me the last time I actually went out on New Year’s Eve. I look happy, don’t I? Maybe even a little drunk. I think this picture was taken around 2 in the A.M.
Yeah, it’s been a while. Since 2007 I’ve either been pregnant and/or nursing a little one. We’re finally feeling ready to rejoin society and venture out on the biggest party night of the year.
I mean, I am totally down with the concept that New Year’s Eve is for amateurs, but I am a little nostalgic for the times I actually had fun on this overrated evening.
My favorite thing to do on New Year’s is to be with a bunch of good friends in one of our homes, have good laughs, a good meal and (lots of) good booze. This is pretty much what I’d like to do on any given night with friends, really.
With really little ones, our options are as follows:
a) Get an overpriced babysitter.
b) Go to our friends’ house with kids and leave at 8pm when things get ugly.
c) Stay home with kids and crack a bottle of champagne at 9pm. (Hey, it’s midnight in New York and there’s no way we are gonna make it to midnight if we stay home).
This year we are giving it a whirl with option ‘b’ and at least hoping for the opportunity to hang out with our friends who have kids around the same age. The good news is THERE WILL BE A BABYSITTER AT THE DINNER PARTY! (Yahoo and a big thanks to my good friend Miranda who has lined one up)!
In some ways I long for the days when I lived in New York City and took a taxi home when the sun came up, whether or not it was a fun evening. However, I must say, snuggling with my three-year-old is way better than sitting in a smelly old cab with a hangover looming on the horizon.
I discovered this super-sweet rendition of What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Facebook page and I’ve been singing it all day which has made me nostalgic for new love, the past, the possibility of possibility.
Regardless, I’m really looking forward to finally doing something on New Year’s Eve, even if it won’t be quite as romantic as it may have been for the subject of that song.
So what are YOU doing New Year’s Eve?
