I’ve been decorating cakes professionally for the past fifteen years, so even before I had a child myself, I knew that party themes were most popular with kids. As a result, I have made countless chocolate animals, fire trucks, and treasure chests.
With these recipes, you can celebrate the wonder and imagination of childhood, where pixie dust is sugarcoated and pirates’ caps are made of chocolate.
Even the youngest of children will give you a clue as to what they are interested in, and by age five they will outright tell you what they want.

The Good Witch of the North and the queen fairy agree that these star wands are magically delicious. The pixies at your party will love them, too. Send the sparkly pink wands home as party favors, or let the children decorate their own with royal icing and sanding sugar. They are sure to cast a spell on all who hold them.
This rather youthful buccaneer is ready for adventure. The skull and crossbones emblem on his chocolate sugar cookie hat warns that he is mischievous, but that cherubic face tells you it’s all in fun.
I found my balloon cookie cutter online, but if you can’t find a “party balloon” cutter, an egg, snow globe, or diamond ring cookie cutter will also work.
