I think it’s about time I admit I am totally addicted to…Airbnb. Have you heard of it? It’s this amazing site where people put their apartments, homes, tree houses, boats, and all types of accommodations up for vacation getaways. I wasn’t lying when I said you can stay in a tree house. In fact, right now I have this beauty – Artsy and Rustic 1927 Tree House – on my wish list. Yup, they have wish lists too. This is so you can keep track of your most favorite finds. I have also added Mexico getaways, a luxurious train caboose, and a stunning apartment in Iceland. See where this addiction comes from? It’s like Pinterest for travelers, meets Facebook.
What I mean about the Facebook part is that Airbnb is a community. People can talk about their places, and people who have stayed there can comment on how it went. There’s a whole lot of honesty that happens here, which makes it easier for you to know what you’re getting yourself into. I’ve used Airbnb quite a few times now and would have to say that each experience has been absolutely fantastic.
I first used this site when I wanted to ditch the hotel and get a more ‘local’ feel while in New York. I went on Airbnb and saw a beautiful apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The apartment had several reviews of people saying that they too had stayed here and had a great experience. I went ahead and booked it, a little hesitant how it would turn out. When I got to New York I met the girl who owned the place, she handed me the keys, and that was that. I had this gorgeous apartment to myself at a fraction of the cost it would be to stay in a hotel. There are also a ton of apartments in Manhattan if you prefer to stay in the heart of the city. I loved the feeling of being able to come home to what felt like my own place. I cooked breakfasts there before I headed out, and enjoyed a hot cup of tea on the stoop before the sun set in the evenings. Since I had to get some work done on this trip, the owner ensured me that there was a strong Wifi connection and local cafes I could work at too. After my trip I wrote a lovely comment about how fantastic it was to stay at this beautiful apartment, and in a couple of hours the girl had responded with kind words too. My experience with Airbnb since then has all been pretty much the same – no hassle and totally unique. It’s the perfect option for when I want to be in a home away from home.
So, before you book your next hotel, consider checking out what Airbnb has to offer in the area. A beautiful yacht, perhaps?
