Thanksgiving Crafts for Kids: Paper pumpkins, pinecone turkeys and more

Pine Cone Turkeys:

These little turkeys are fun to assemble and provide colorful decorations for the Thanksgiving table.

Pine cones, pipe cleaners, feathers, googly eyes, white school glue or hot glue gun, other embellishments (optional)

Step 1: Use glue to attach feathers to back of pine cone.

Step 2: Curl top of pipe cleaner to form head.

Step 3: Attach googly eyes to either side of head.

Step 4: Attach head to front of pine cone.

Tissue Paper Pumpkins:

These tissue paper pumpkins require a little patience and fussy work but are absolutely worth it. Use them to decorate the table or mantle, or string a few together to form a garland.

Orange tissue paper, green pipe cleaners, scissors

Step 1: Measure and cut five sheets of orange tissue paper 6×12 inches and stack them on top of each other.

Step 2: Fold shortest side of paper (6-inch side) end to end accordion style in approximately 1-inch segments. The finished accordion should measure approximately 1×6 inches.

Step 3: Fold in half so paper stack is now 1×3 inches and round corners of the non-folded (open) edge with scissors.

Step 4: Cut two triangles diagonally from the folded (closed edge) leaving at least 1/4-inch paper attached in the center, then open back to original 1×6 folded stack.

Step 5: Fold a green pipe cleaner in half and insert center of tissue paper stack so that the fold in the pipe cleaner overlaps the stack. Twist pipe cleaner to secure.

Step 6: One side at a time, fan out the paper. Then very carefully separate each layer of tissue, bringing toward the center of the flower.

Step 7: Fold pipe cleaner down to make pumpkin stem shorter.

Note: These pumpkins are made in the same way as tissue paper flowers. Here’s a step-by-step photo tutorial.
