10 Inspiring Quotes to Get You Through The Day as a Parent

There are days when parenting is a sweet, simple joy. We play with blocks, the kids happily eat their dinner, and we finish the day with a sunset saunter to the park. And then there are the rest of the days. The ones where I collapse into bed, exhausted from another day among many of diaper changes, PB&Js, and backseat fights, all while trying to complete a sentence with my husband.

I don’t despair because I know these days don’t last forever—but sometimes I’m tempted to. Along with books, I so appreciate quotes about parenting (and life in general) from wiser people, because they give me a quick battery recharge during my quotidian tasks of running a family.

Here are some of my favorite words of wisdom that help me be a better mother (even if they’re not directly related to parenting):

1. Good Kids

“Don’t let yourself become so concerned with raising a good kid that you forget you already have one.”

— Glennon Melton-Doyle, Momastery

2. Enjoy Life

“The trick is to enjoy life. Don’t wish away your days waiting for better ones ahead.”

— Marjorie Pay Hinkley

3. Three Gatekeepers

“The words of the tongue should have three gatekeepers: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?”

— Arabian proverb

4. Grounded Children

If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.”

— Abigail Van Buren

5. Relish The Charms

“You will never have this day with your children again. Tomorrow, they’ll be a little older than they were today. This day is a gift, breathe and notice. Smell and touch them; study their faces and little feet and pay attention. Relish the charms of the present. Enjoy today, mama. It will be over before you know it.”

— Jen Hatmaker

6. A Thousand Times Brighter

“So even when it might seem easy to throw in the towel, just hang on. Things are a thousand times brighter on the other side and your children will be better for it.”

— a mother

7. Greener Grass

“The grass is always greener where you water it.”

— unknown

8. Big Stuff

“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don’t listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won’t tell you the big stuff when they are big because, to them, all of it has always been big stuff.”

— Catherine M. Wallace

9. The Things You Have

“Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have.”

— unknown

10. You Should See My Heart

“If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart.”

— unknown
