It’s no secret that I love food.
I love to eat it, make it, talk about it, write about it, photograph it, and play with it.
I don’t play with it in the building bridges of meatloaf over moats of gravy and mashed potatoes, or smiley faces on my plate with veggies (although that is fun!) kind of play…
I like to play with textures and flavors, mixing new ingredients with old favorites, and now that we’re in a new city, I’m surrounded by new markets and new inspiration to create, to taste, to discover. My mouth waters and my fingers itch to get into the kitchen, or to search out the nearest new restaurant to see what they offer, that will inspire and sate. You know the kind of food that is so purely good that your taste buds stand at attention and your whole body zings and sinks into that happy place? That kind of food.
Whenever we are at a restaurant, or when I am fantasizing about what I want to make the next time I’m in the kitchen; I almost always lean towards the savory.
Neither Nathan nor I have much of a sweet tooth, that’s just not really what gets our proverbial motors running. Every now and again I’ll get a craving for something sweet, but it’s almost always immediately followed by the craving for something salty, spicy, crunchy savory.
Over the years, I’ve brought Nathan around to my way of eating. He has come to see the light, so to speak, and has discovered the pure goodness and joy that is flavor packed foods that tantalize the taste buds with seasonings and spice. He has come to relish in dishes that are not only flavor packed, but texturally enticing, too.
I adore food that has layers, not as in the architecture of the food, but more the layers of flavor that can be found within dishes that are crafted to bring your taste-buds to attention, teasing them with sweet, citrus, tangy, spicy, salty, crunchy, slow burning heat… I could go on and on.
For me, this is the kind of food that I want to feed my family; food that nourishes their bodies, because it’s purely good food, but it goes beyond that to nourishing their souls, too. This is the food that we bond over. We dream up recipes together or find recipes that inspire us, and then we make them together and we enjoy them together. Some of our best quality time as a family is spent in the kitchen or around the table; that’s when stories are told and favorite moments from the day are shared. It’s while cooking together, and eating together that we really share our thoughts, days, dreams, and ideas. Those are the moments that I cherish the most.
Since the kitchen is the heart of our home, and my family the most important part of making a house a home; I wanted to share 10 of my favorite savory dishes from around the web in the hopes that they’ll not only make your mouth water, but inspire you to indulge in a little family time, too. The recipes range from breakfast, snacks, and dips all the way to the main event. There’s a little bit of goodness in there for everyone.
