Mid August through the beginning of September is known as back to school time.

Some schools actually start as early as mid-July, but typically the back to school frenzy is mid-August to Early September, and there are so many things to do.

There are school supplies to be purchased, school clothes to be checked, new shoes, backpacks and lunches to be planned.

One of my favorite parts of back to school is the first day of school. The possibilities are endless: new friends, new classroom, new rules, new things to learn.  There’s a certain hope, optimism and joy in beginnings and every school year brings with it a new batch of dreams and possibilities.

I try to do something fun for and with my kids for each first day of school – special breakfasts, surprise notes in their lunch bags, and they get to pick a special dinner to celebrate the new year, too.

I grew up with an elementary school teacher, so most of the end of my summers were spent helping her to put her classroom together, decorating bulletin boards, placing name plates on desks, organizing classroom libraries and inhaling the scent of freshly mimeographed worksheets {oops – just gave away my age}  The teacher’s school year starts and ends long before and after your kids’ year, and they do it because they have a true and genuine love for teaching, and for their students.

New school years are all about new beginnings, and I wanted to do something new and fun for the kids this year, so while searching for fun back to school ideas, I stumbled across a bunch of fun and free printables, and they’ve inspired me and gotten my creative juices flowing, and I thought I’d share them with y’all, too.

Whether you are looking for first day of school photo props, cute welcome back and thank you teacher gifts, first day of school memory book ideas or just need some lunch box note inspiration – these 15 fun & free printables will help you kick this school year off in style.
