Look to the Cookie: Inspiration in Fortune Cookies

file0001660687994My 7-year-old informed me all about Chinese New Year. I guess she learned about it in school.

“Do you know how to say Happy New Year in Chinese? I do. Do you know that the lucky color is red? They have a festival and hang lanterns up and light fireworks to celebrate. And did you know it lasts for lots of days; not just one day. It goes until February 15th, I think. Do you know if that’s right, Mom? Do you know what year it is? It’s the year of the horse. Do you know that I was born in the year of the dog?”

She showed me the dragon she made out of colorful paper. She entertained me with the stories of all she’d learned in class, and she excitedly quizzed me on random facts about Chinese New Year, making me feel stupid because I knew nothing. In fact, all I could think of was — Mmmmm, I could go for Chinese food! And the best part about ordering Chinese food? The fortune cookies, of course! Here are a couple of my favorites!

  • A Good Reason for Seconds 1 of 7

Some people might take this to mean, "Put this cookie back and choose another one." But really, once you've cracked the cookie to get to the fortune, there's no putting it back. Clearly they meant, "Go ahead and have a second cookie! You deserve it!"

  • Ummm, Thank You? 2 of 7

What an random and strange compliment.

  • Encouragement 3 of 7

This cookie was a Godsend. I was feeling overwhelmed and helpless, not sure how I was going to handle everything on my plate and then I got this fortune. It was a reminder to just keep going. No giving up, no breaking down, no crying. Just keep on keeping on.

  • Try Something New 4 of 7

... Unless it's a hot fudge & onion sundae, or going to work wearing nothing but your undies, or trying out a 'Flock of Seagulls' hairdo ...

  • Smile 5 of 7

You know, whenever you're ready. No hurry or anything. Happiness can wait. No need to rush into anything now.

  • Children Are Important 6 of 7

Yep. Children do play an important role in my life. In fact, right now they're playing 'Run around the house like greyhounds while shrieking like banshees (or the mermaid in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) while I threaten to run away to Bora Bora.'

  • And my Favorite One . . . 7 of 7

YES! What this says! Tiramisu CAN wash away the day's problems. A carton of New York Super Fudge Chunk CAN put a smile on your face. A dozen chocolate chip cookies CAN make you dance around while singing Get Happy a la Judy Garland in Summer Stock. Or maybe that's just me ...
