There are people in the world who are said to be able to speak to those who have died. Whether you call them Psychics or Mediums, we’ve all seen them in movies and on television shows. Personally, my thoughts about Mediums used to go no farther than Whoopie Goldberg’s character in Ghost, but after my daughter died I wondered about them. Could they be real?

I started casually bringing up the idea of Mediums in conversation. Some of my friends were 100% on board. They had stories of using a Medium to contact dead relatives, stories where the Medium said things that only their relative would know. It was intriguing. They all told me I should use a Medium to contact Madeline.

Then there were the other people I mentioned it to. They told me it was all done with smoke and mirrors. One friend swore to me that Mediums like Sylvia Browne have plants in the crowd who chat with folks and gather info for Sylvia to use. These friends begged me to not see a Medium, because all of their “magic” runs on the power of suggestion and desire to believe.

I’m not sure what I think. I want to have a way to talk to Madeline, but I’m also pretty cynical and have a hard time trusting anything I can’t see and explain. My desire to believe in Mediums is equal to my desire to not put my hopes on something that will hurt me. I’m willing to try, but am I really open to the possibility that anything can happen? I don’t know.

What would you do if you were me?
