Slow Cookers and Cans: A Match Made in Heaven

The coming of Fall means school and sports, and the end of sleeping in and lazy summer afternoons.

School nights and sports mean there are some days where after picking the kids up from school we have 15 minutes to get to gymnastics and then straight from gymnastics to little league, it’s on those days that the drive-thru becomes a temptation.

It’s an easy solution, if not the best.

On those days, I’m beyond grateful and a bit giddy that slow cookers exist. Coming home after a long day of school and practices and homework done in gyms and at baseball fields – it’s absolutely heavenly to walk in to the house and be greeted with the comforting and delicious aroma of a meal already ready for us.  Knowing that while the kids are showering, all I have to do is set the table and dinner’s already taken care of, that’s pretty wonderful.

One of the very first things that I ever made in my slow cooker was taco soup, and over the years — it’s become a family favorite for its flavor and a favorite of mine because it’s so easy to make.  Cans of beans, tomatoes and corn combine with cooked ground turkey, onion and taco seasoning to make a soul comforting, belly filling, easy and delicious meal.

One of my kids’ favorite meals, most kids’ favorite meals really, is spaghetti.  They love to slurp the noodles and dip their bread in the sauce to sop up every last bit.  I love spaghetti, too but there are so many times that I just don’t have the time to stand over the stove checking the sauce and stirring it frequently.

My solution: Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce!  {did you just hear choirs of angels singing?}

Cans of tomatoes – we prefer fire roasted tomatoes with basil – garlic and a few herbs and spices {meat optional} all day in the slow cooker and I can have a family favorite dinner on the table in 15 minutes.

Canned favorites + Slow Cooker = Major Win!

Taco Soup in The Slow Cooker


  • 1.5 lb cooked ground turkey (I almost always have some already cooked and frozen or in the refrigerator)
  • 1 Cup favorite Taco Seasoning
  • 1 (11 oz) can corn
  • 1 (16 oz) can red kidney beans
  • 1 (16 oz) can black beans
  • 1 (16 oz) can Cannellini or Pinto Beans
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Green Chilies
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans of water


  1. Place the already cooked ground turkey into the slow cooker along with taco seasoning
  2. Top with the corn, beans and tomatoes
  3. Add in water
  4. Stir and cook on low for 6 – 8 hours

Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce


  • 1.5 lb already cooked ground turkey (or leave this out for meatless)
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes with basil
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans petite diced fire roasted tomatoes
  • 3 tsp dried oregano
  • 3 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp salt


  1. Place the (optional) ground turkey in the slow cooker
  2. Top with garlic and onions
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes with basil, fire roasted diced tomatoes, and tomato paste
  4. Top with herbs and salt
  5. Stir and cook on low for 6 – 8 hours

**Cook your favorite pasta and top with your slow cooker spaghetti sauce and a bit of fresh basil and parmesan cheese.  Voila!
