So Much to So Many

People often ask me where I get ideas for the songs I write. For me, it’s life, whether my life or someone else’s.  If I am moved by an event or conversation, I will sometimes put it into a song.

Last week I was sitting with a couple of girl song writers in a writing session.  I had my 9-month-old with me, bouncing him on my lap while we were chatting.  One of them asked how I do it. Touring, writing, and performing, with 2 kids.  I answered with “It’s a lot of work.”  One of the girls in the session was a touring artist when I was a kid.  Her daughter is a friend of mine.  She had said it’s hard but so worth it.  I of course had the wise comment “Ya know,  As a mother, ya never get a sick day.”  From there we began to discuss our jobs as women. We are so many things to so many people.  We have a million jobs to do and just one of us to pull it off.  Me myself, I’m a daughter, wife, sister, mother, boss, writer, singer, business owner, caregiver. The list goes on and on.  I swear at times it is overwhelming.  I wonder if I will be able to deliver on all fronts.  It’s scary. When I look into the mirror I feel like I should be looking at Wonder Woman.  But, all I see is little ole me.  So I took that concept and created this song.  This performance is me and my band guys doing vocal warmups before a show.  It’s not the best quality, but, it gets the point across.  The title of the song is “Me”  and the lyrics are :

I’m Somebody’s daughter, Somebody’s friend

a shoulder to lean on, no matter when

I’m somebody’s teacher, when they don’t understand

I’ve got a seat in the bleachers, I’m the worlds biggest fan

I wish I was half the woman, I’ve got to be

I wish I had all the answers right in front of me

I’m everything to everyone and I’m scared as I can be

Cause when I look into the mirror all I see is ME

I’m somebody’s sweetheart, somebody’s girl

Someone’s direction to find their way in this world

I’ve got to be perfect even when I feel bad

I’ve got to keep giving when I gave all I had

When I feel uncertain I’m on my knees to pray

I know that it’s all worth it, but at the end of the day
