Traveling with young kids is never easy. It can be full of whining and the hauling of massive amounts of “kid stuff” all around the world. Those things DO make traveling with kids seem really unattractive, but I think travel also teaches our kids some amazing things…

An Appreciation For Life

On our last mini-break to Rwanda (from here it’s a hop, skip and one long drive) we learned that there are floating papyrus islands. In some parts of the world people even live on them, although the ones we saw were only inhabited by birds and crocodiles. Our family has not been able to stop talking about the floating papyrus islands since. When you adventure together as a family, memories are created that keep family bonds strong and creativity alive.

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

The Value of Balance

It’s refreshing to see the world from a viewpoint other than the one you are used to, and to return to your “real life” with fresh perspective. Kids need stability, to be sure, but they can benefit greatly from seeing parents who are willing to guide them in great life skills… like the balance between work, adventure and fun.

“I’ve learned the value of absorbing the moment. I remember the first time Ripley saw her shadow. My God, it was like shadows had just been invented. It was the most exquisite moment.”

Risk Taking As A Skill

Our kids are growing up in an age when entrepreneurs make a living while blogging from bed and multi-million dollar companies are formed in garages. When they take risks with you and experience new things, they learn how to be resourceful in life. They learn how to live a life that thinks beyond themselves and the world they know.

“If you don’t take risks, you’ll have a wasted soul.”

”• Drew Barrymore

“You can’t prepare for everything life’s going to throw at you. And you can’t avoid danger. It’s there. The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you’ll (miss) out on all the adventure.”

”• Jeannette Walls, Half Broke Horses
