I have a confession to make.
I drank a little Diet Coke during my pregnancy (a can per day starting in my second trimester), and have continued to consume a small amount since having my baby. I know, I know. Worst thing ever, right?
Everything that I have read says that a small amount of caffeine each day will not hurt my baby while breastfeeding, however, her colic combined with a new study regarding the effects of caffeine on breastfed babies have forced me to make a drastic decision.
I am giving up Diet Coke — totally.
I am not sure when my affair with Diet Coke started, but drinking Diet Coke is the closest thing to a vice or addiction I have. I am not a big coffee drinker, though I’ve tried to pick up that habit. I am fully aware that it isn’t only the caffeine in Diet Coke that is questionably safe for my baby, but also its artificial sweetener — aspartame.
So, it’s been a week since I had even a taste of Diet Coke, however, I’ve found a suitable replacement. I am now drinking caffeine free Diet Coke, because I still crave the taste of cold cola. Ideally, I hope to kick even the caffeine free Diet Coke out of my life, but for now, it’s baby steps.
I don’t know if Kara’s colic has been linked worsened by my occasional Diet Coke, but a wave of guilt washed over me recently and I just had to put my food down on this addiction.
Did you give up caffeine completely while pregnant and nursing? Was it a challenge, if so?
