When I think of lip liner, I think of the early ’90s, when the “cool” 20-year-olds were lining their lips with a really dark pencil and leaving the lip color natural.
It was not the best look.
These days, you almost never see lip liner that doesn’t match the lip color perfectly. And that’s the whole idea.
Lip liner is supposed to outline your lips in order to even them out on both sides. It can also help your lips look fuller, keep lipstick in place, and help prevent feathering or smudging of lip color.
So, do you need lip liner?
If you like to change up your lipstick often, consider investing in a nude lip liner. Focus on outlining your lips, on the skin side, to create really clean edges for your bold lip color.
If you have a favorite color that you wear often, look for a pencil that matches as closely as possible to that shade. Line your lips and fill in the centers with the lip liner to create a great base and prevent feathering.
If you are more of a low-maintenance lip color kind of gal, you probably wouldn’t enjoy the added step of lip liner, so I’d say you can just forget about it.
