How to Test Your Skin’s Color IQ

It’s a little less than two weeks old and it’ll change the way you shop for foundation, forever. I’m talking about Sephora’s innovative Color IQ — a new skin-shade matching technology. You first heard about it in my post on Finding Your Perfect Foundation Match. Since then, I’ve tried it for myself. Follow along as I share with you how to test your Color IQ…

  • The Scanner 1 of 6

In the palm of her hand is the genius Color IQ scanner! It scans your skin on multiple levels, sorts through the data in analysis, and delivers your own unique code suited specifically for you to find your perfect foundation color match! Long gone are the days of guessing sample after sample to find what you think might be the one. It's accurate and it really works!

Besides all the technical aspects, it's also kind of fun to play personal paparazzi with your skin!

  • 1. Prepping the Skin 2 of 6

Before the technician can get scan happy with your skin, prep work takes place. She removed existing makeup in three places: jawline, temple, and forehead. After that, she applied moisturizer to hydrate the skin to achieve the most accurate results.

  • 2. Scan 3 of 6

Here she is scanning my brains forehead. I'm trying to hold still, as if my life depended on it. That's not part of the routine, I just felt like it was the right thing to do. With a simple 'beep' it was all finished — simple and painless.

Shortly after, the results appeared on her screen. My color IQ skintone number came back as: 2Y07, which means next to nothing to you, but everything to me —  shopping comes next!

  • 3. Enter Results 4 of 6

Next, she input my number into the computer and a list of 20+ recommended foundations came back! A few that piqued my interest were:

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer icon

Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation

Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream icon

  • 4. Compare and Test Recommended Products 5 of 6

After sorting through the results and talking about the benefits of each, the technician grabbed my top favorites to try out. She showed me the best way to apply, and talked about situations in which different foundations would be more suitable for my needs.

  • 5. Save Results 6 of 6

Instead of staying until close and writing down all the information, the results were sent to my email address and saved for future reference. This little experience is one every lady should experience if you want to truly find your perfect foundation match!

And a special thanks to Mary (my new makeup-artist friend) for making all the magic happen! Can't wait to play makeup again soon!
