Having soup at Thanksgiving is a tradition I started with my own family about 10 years ago. Growing up, we never had any appetizers or snacks during the day on Thanksgiving. We just waited all day to eat and then feasted on one huge Thanksgiving meal. Knowing now just how unhealthy it is to go for such a long period of time without food, I now always make Thanksgiving an all day eating event of several little meals instead of one enormous one.
Of course soup is my favorite Thanksgiving starter. It’s comforting, warming and a nice way to relax in the middle of a hectic holiday. I serve our soup either at lunchtime, or mid-afternoon a few hours before dinner is served. I like to serve a soup like the one shown above, or any other creamy pureed soup that’s not too heavy. Afterwards, I follow with a large Crudite Platter with several dips to choose from before serving the big meal.
