Acai Berry Bowl: My Toddler’s Healthy “Ice Cream”

I’d been in Los Angeles for a few months before finally trying an Acai Berry Bowl (I had mostly avoided them because I was unsure how to pronounce it — it’s ah-SIGH-ee, by the way). I was hooked with my first — the texture was perfect and it was refreshing, cool, and delicious.

But the real game-changer was realizing I could make these at home. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, the violet colored berry might grow on the acai palm trees native to the Amazon, but you can also find them pureed and frozen in a fine grocery near you.

While the berries themselves aren’t particularly sweet (similar to a fig or date in sweetness), my little one calls it ice cream no matter how many times I insist she’s eating a nutritional berry blend. It’s that good. Packed full of vitamins A and C, calcium, and antioxidants, the berry bowl is a perfect start to any day that might need a little extra energy.

You can customize the bowl any way you like — my favorite combination includes granola, bananas, strawberry, coconut shavings, and a drizzle of honey. It’s exactly how I’d build my favorite ice cream sundae: a little bit of fruit, little bit of crunch, and a nice finish of something sweet on top.

Follow the instructions on your frozen bag (most call for a non-dairy liquid like coconut milk or orange juice). Blend, and top! It’s so simple and really feels like a treat. Too sweet? Swap the coconut shavings for flax seeds. Not sweet enough? Try using agave instead of honey. Extra bonus — the colors make for one killer Instagram breakfast photo.

The recipe below is for two smaller helpings but can easily be doubled.

Acai Berry Bowl

Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 5 strawberries
  • 2 acai frozen berry packs (I bought mine at Whole Foods)
  • 1/4 cup non-dairy liquid, such as coconut milk or orange juice
  • 1/2 cup favorite granola
  • 2 teaspoons coconut shavings
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Directions:

  1. Slice banana and strawberries. Blend frozen berry packs with non-dairy liquid until pureed but still thick (consistency of a sorbet). Divide into two small bowls and finish with toppings.
