Warm Up with a Bourbon Chai

It’s winter. It’s cold. Hot drinks are in order! Piping hot and filled with aromatic spices that are sure to warm you up, chai tea is a great option on a chilly night. But sometimes, especially after a little too much snow, you need your chai tea extra warm. Enter bourbon.

Bourbon is a beautiful complement to chai, especially “wheated bourbon,” one that is made with corn, barley, and wheat instead of corn, barley, and rye. This type of bourbon is softer and has more caramel and vanilla flavor, which is exactly what you need in your cup of chai. Maker’s Mark is the most famous of this type of bourbon and is what I used in this recipe, but you can feel free to play around with different types and flavors.

Bourbon Chai Tea

This Bourbon Chai Tea is about as good as it gets. You may never be able to go back to a boring chai latte ever again! Not only is the bourbon-infused chai delicious, but it’s also topped with a softly whipped Spiced Bourbon Cream that melts into the tea, making it extra luscious and flavorful. This cup of cozy is so good you’ll forget the cold weather. Promise.

Cozy Bourbon Chai Tea

Makes: 1 serving

6 ounces of your favorite chai tea
3 ounces (6 tablespoons) half-and-half
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) bourbon (I used Maker’s Mark, which has a nice flavor for this recipe)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (optional)
2 spoonfuls Spiced Bourbon Cream (recipe below)

1. Make sure your chai tea is HOT in your mug. Add the half-and-half, bourbon, vanilla extract, and maple syrup (the maple syrup is a perfect addition for those who like their chai a little sweet). Stir.
2. Top tea with large spoonfuls of the Spiced Bourbon Cream. Let sit for 1-2 minutes then enjoy!

Spiced Bourbon Whipped Cream

Spiced Bourbon Cream

Makes: 4-6 servings for the Bourbon Chai Tea

1 cup whipping cream
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon bourbon
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom

1. Add all ingredients to a medium or large mixing bowl. Beat on high with a hand mixer until cream is thickened and soft peaks form (do not overbeat; you want a “soft” whipped cream).
