My 6-year-old Anna is obsessed with Starbucks, more than any caffeine-addicted adult I know. She is always asking to go because of that devilishly-delicious double chocolaty chip frappuccino!
Anna asks for this drink all the time, whether she’s seen a Starbucks or not, but especially when she comes into contact in any way, shape, or form with that iconic logo. I mean, who can blame her, that frappe is good. Well, except when you are her mother and hear the words, “Can we go to Starbucks?” come out of her mouth 500 times weekly. Sadly for Anna, my answer is almost always, “No.” Well, recently, she took matters into her own hands!
On a day when she was jonesing, Anna knew my husband would be coming home soon.
Step #1 to getting her fix included Note #1, taped to the door:
“Ples chik millbox dad”
Step #2 of the grand plan involved Note #2, placed in the mailbox:
“wine you git home ask Anna if she wants to go to strabuks.”
When Nate got home, I was hanging out with all the kids in our bedroom. I had no idea what Anna had done, so when Nate walked in the room and asked, “Anna, do you want to go to Starbucks?” I was stunned! Anna was very pleased with her cleverness, and Nate and I totally cracked up.
Sadly for Anna, there was no Starbucks at the end of her scheme. (We are the meanest parents in the world, in case you were wondering.) Lucky for Anna, though, we have figured out a copycat version that always hits the spot for her. Which also means I now hear, “Can we make the Starbucks drink?” more often that I ever heard “Can we go to Starbucks?” Heaven help us.
Starbucks’ Double Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino

- 16 ounces milk
- 2 cups ice
- 4 tablespoons chocolate syrup (click here for a homemade version) or hot fudge (straight out of the jar, not heated up)
- 4 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Place all ingredients into a blender and process until well blended. Serve with a straw, the fatter the better for drinking up those chocolaty chip chunks!
