Hawaiian Pizza Dog

Most kids like plain old cheese pizza, not me. I was always a fan of the hawaiian pizza with it’s layers of canadian bacon and pineapple. I still order myself a hawaiian pizza as an adult and I’m getting my kids in on the action. With our gourmet hot dog test kitchen in full force this was an obvious choice for our next adventure. Oh what a hit this dog is. The neighborhood kids got wind of our latest creation so it looks like we might be feeding the block Hawaiian Dogs this weekend. Good thing they are beyond easy to make and I can let the kids do most of the work!

Add a thin layer of sauce and a thin layer of cheese and bake for about 8 minutes in a preheated 400 degree oven.

  • Pineapple 6 of 7

I used a small can of crushed and chunk. Feel free to use fresh pineapple and even grill it for added flavor. I went the lazy route, canned and stovetop (could have even gone the microwave route).

After the pizza has cooked for 8 minutes, add the dog and top with a little more sauce and cheese and load up the pineapple. Fold up the sides and cook for another 2-5 minutes. Yum!

Hot dogs (opt for natural, uncured, no nitrates or nitrites added)

Flat bread or Naan

pizza sauce

shredded mozzarella cheese

can of chunk or crushed pineapple

Fire up the grill to medium. Spiral cut your dogs (see slideshow for how to video). Cook your dogs a couple of minutes on each side. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. If your flat bread or naan is much larger than your cooked hot dogs, then just cut them to size. Brush a thin layer of sauce onto the flat bread or naan, top with a thin layer of cheese and bake for about 8 minutes. Meanwhile empty the can of chunk or crushed pineapple into a small saucepan and heat until just warm. Remove the pizza from the oven, place your dog in the center, if you like it saucy, add more sauce and more cheese and a layer of pineapple. Fold over the sides and bake for another 2-5 minutes.
