Hot Cocoa as Thick and Rich as Melted Chocolate Bars

Whenever it’s cold outside, all I want to do is curl up with a mug of hot chocolate. But not just any old mug of hot chocolate. Polar Express-worthy hot chocolate.

I clearly remember reading The Polar Express with my parents as a child. I practically have the book memorized we read it so often. My mother even had a large framed poster of the book cover that hung in our living room throughout the year, so that train was constantly in my vision and on my mind.

As a young chocoholic, my favorite part of the book was when the children were served hot cocoa as “thick and rich as melted chocolate bars” on their magical train ride. Oh how I wanted my own mug of that delicious drink!

Now that I’m a mother myself, I wanted to serve that magical mug of cocoa to my children. This year I created a recipe with my daughter. When it was ready to drink, we called her little sister in and I told them, “We are going to drink hot chocolate in the living room while reading The Polar Express.” They were so excited they cheered.

My girls are still young enough that they couldn’t remember the plot line from reading the book a year ago. They were on pins and needles clear up until the last page.

As I started to read about the hot cocoa on the train, my oldest daughter stopped me and exclaimed, “Our hot chocolate IS as thick and rich as a melted chocolate bar!”

My cup runneth over.

And, in case you’re wondering, I cried reading the last page. I tried really hard not to, but it was pretty much impossible. The magic is still there.

Polar Express Hot Chocolate, a.k.a. Hot Chocolate as Thick and Rich as Melted Chocolate Bars

  • 2 cups milk
  • ¾ ounces dark or bittersweet chocolate
  • 1 ½ ounces milk chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • ½ tablespoon powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Finely chop the dark and milk chocolate and mix together in a bowl. Sift the cocoa powder and powdered sugar over the chopped chocolate.

Heat milk over medium heat on the stove, stirring regularly. Once milk is very warm, add chocolate mixture to the milk. Whisk constantly until milk is hot and chocolate is fully melted. Add vanilla and salt, stir, then serve.

Make 2 servings.
