A long time ago someone told me the best thing to drink first thing in the morning was hot water with a slice a lemon. A little internet research proved that this person was correct in the idea that there are health benefits to mug of warm lemony water. Among them, boosted immune system, improved digestion, vitamin C, clearer skin. All of these sound awesome, but I have to be honest, I just like the taste. A few times a week I set my alarm a little earlier and get up an hour before everyone else in the house. I pad downstairs in my slippers and make a nice cup of hot water and lemon. This is my “me” time before the day starts and I take advantage of the stillness around me to get a few things done.
As I sip my water with lemon I start my morning with some gentle stretching exercises. A few years ago I suffered a horrible back injury and my back always tightens up at night. If I stretch it out first thing in the morning it means I’ll have a nearly pain-free day. Then, I check my email and delete any spam or marketing messages that came in overnight. I also proofread any emails I have drafted before I send them. There is nothing quite like fresh eyes in the morning. Finally, I write down my to-do list for the day and visualize how I will enjoy my day and the time with my family. By this time I’ve usually finished sipping my water with lemon and move on to making a healthy breakfast for everyone.
