National Junk Food Day: 4 Homemade "Junk Food" Treats!

Really? There’s a National Junk Food Day? Sure enough, and it’s today, July 21st. I mean, I suppose if there’s a National Ice Cream Day (and month), there would be a National Junk Food Day as well.

As Paula shared over on Strollerderby, “A 2003 study¬†found that nearly a third of the calories Americans consume are junk food”. Um. Yeah. So, we like junk food. But before you run out to the convenience store to stock up on candy bars and Cheetos or write the day off completely, check out these fantastic do-it-yourself, homemade “junk food” recipes from the Family Kitchen!

Homemade OreosHomemade Ho-hos

Jaime’s Homemade Ho-hos are top-notch, and while she describes them as a pain, I have a trick to solve that. Bake the cake portion as a thicker solid cake, top with the filling and then finish with the chocolate coating. Cut into squares, and you have all the Ho-ho taste, but less of the ho-hum mess of rolling and dipping.

Homemade Oreos

Kelsy has me sold with these. Can you imagine the looks on your kids’ faces when you whip up a batch of these? A tall glass of milk and a homemade Oreo are all you need to get your junk food kick today.

Whole Wheat Pop-Tarts
Jaime’s version of Pop-Tarts is made with whole wheat flour for a healthier alternative. Simple and sweet, my kids would eat these up and never even know I had made the change. These are so much better than foil packaging and the toaster.

Strawberry Pop-Tarts

Yes, both Jaime and Brooke have tackled this easy breakfast food such is its popularity. Sprinkles and frosting and filling? Oh my. Toss a few in freezer bags and then revive in the toaster oven until warm and delicious.
