This Sparkly Blood Orange Basil drink recipe makes for a perfect cocktail or mocktail (for kids, pregnant or new moms, and designated drivers) to ring in the new year! The bright and wintry citrus flavor of blood orange and grapefruit pairs beautifully with a hint of basil, while tonic water brings even more bubbly to the party. Once the kids are in bed, break out the gin for a delicious twist on a classic gin and tonic.

This drink comes kid-approved! My 3-year-old, Owen, couldn’t get enough. I mixed in the basil to make for an interesting twist, but I have to admit I was a bit worried about how this mocktail would go down with the kids but the basil complements the other flavors so nicely and is not overpowering. I don’t even think they noticed there was basil; they just knew the drink tasted good!

Sparkly Blood Orange Basil Mocktail

Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 3 large basil leaves
  • 2 ounces ruby red grapefruit juice
  • 4 ounces blood orange Italian soda
  • 2 ounces tonic water

Directions:

  1.  If you have a muddler, place the basil in the bottom of a metal shaker or large sturdy glass and add the grapefruit juice. Muddle the basil until it is fragrant. Add the blood orange soda and tonic water and mix well. Serve with or without ice.
  2. If you do not have a muddler, chop the basil leaves on a cutting board. Get your spoon wet with the grapefruit juice and then smash the leaves up with the back of the spoon on a wooden cutting board. Scrape the basil into two glasses, splitting evenly. Add blood orange soda, grapefruit juice, and tonic water and mix well. Serve with or without ice. If you make the drink this way, you will have bits of basil in your drink. I think it’s prettier this way, but if you don’t want the flecks then use a muddler as described in step 1.
