Play with Your Food: NotMartha Dishes on her Yummy Philosophy

Megan Reardon is not Martha.  And, she’s okay with that.  As the writer behind the beloved blog, she’s conjured all sorts of incredible food creations.  Last year, for instance, there was the hideously horrifying Meat Hand, a hunk of meatloaf shaped like a gory, severed hand then served atop a bed of mashed potatoes.  This year, she’s working through a penchant for her newest kitchen toy, a Skull Cake pan, which has already produced a pumpkin cake and Cinnamon Swirl Skull Cake of the Week. Not to mention the Tentacle Pot Pies she created for our Babble reader’s this year.   But, before you think all of her kitchen creations are totally terrifying, take a minute to oogle the little gingerbread house she made, which perches on the edge of a mug, or the self-standing Partiridge in a Pear Tree centerpiece she masterfully carved from scratch.   With so many wild and witty food ideas we  decided to catch up with Megan and get her take on the lastest food topics and trends.  Here she spills her secrets on using food as a medium for fun.

I started the blog as a place to keep notes on lip balm recipes I’d been working on, as well as a place to keep links to stuff I suspect I’ll want to find later on. I’m still doing just that and it’s lasted a lot longer than I expected, I’ve had Not Martha since 2001.

Food: What I Believe

I have to admit I see food mostly as a medium for creating funny things, especially around Halloween. I eat a lot more quinoa and kale than you’d suspect looking at my site.

Favorite Fast-Fix Recipe

Sauteed kale (or broccoli) with garlic and red pepper flakes over pasta, I blanch and freeze kale for this very purpose. Add a rotisserie chicken (hide the evidence) and it’s like you actually planned dinner.

On Recipe Books

I’m still such a noob when it comes to cooking that I rely on Bittman’s “How To Cook Everything”. If I’m feeling ambitious I trust Cook’s Illustrated, I really need all the detail for why and how that their recipes offer. Give me a simple recipe and I’ll fail quickly and dramatically.

On Bacon

I have woven baskets out of bacon. Clearly I’m a fan.

On Dessert

Shhh, don’t tell but I generally don’t like cooked fruit desserts. I think I’m more of a cheesecake/creme brulee/flan sort of person.

Something you’ve never divulged to your readers

I don’t like brownies. Clearly there is something wrong with me.
