Quick and Easy Weeknight Steak Sandwich

This is my favorite go-to quick and easy weeknight meal. This is basically an easy Philly cheese, except without the cheese. Instead of the cheese, I like to add my special recipe for spicy mayonnaise I learned from a good friend. If you’re not watching your calories like me, go ahead and make this the ultimate easy comfort food, and add some mild cheddar to make this an easy Philly cheese with spicy mayonnaise. I make this with Steak-umms brand sliced steak, it was a brand that was all the rage in the late 70s and early 80s. It’s easy and tasty and one of the few pre-prepared foods that I still rely on. Of course this isn’t an “authentic Philly,” but it’s so easy and delicious. Here’s one of Steak-umms vintage ads with their very popular jingle:

If Steak-umms isn’t your thing, feel free to substitute very thinly sliced sirloin steak. I usually cook up some sweet potato fries to serve along with the sandwiches, another one of my favorite easy comfort foods.

Steak Sandwich Recipe

1 – 2 lb package Steak-umms, or 2 lbs very thinly sliced sirloin
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 – 8 oz, or a small container of mushrooms, I used baby bella
a drizzle of olive oil, about 1 tablespoon
salt and pepper to taste
Sub Rolls, or 2 baguettes cut in half
sliced mild cheddar, optional

    Spicy Mayonnaise

    1/4 cup mayonnaise
    1 tablespoon grainy mustard
    2 tablespoons horseradish
a few dashes of hot sauce, to taste

      1. Preheat a large skillet. Add steak. Add bell peppers, onions and mushrooms. Add salt and pepper. Saute over medium heat until meat is browned and mushrooms are tender.

Note: I just chop up the steaks with a spatula or spoon. I’ve tried to make the steaks whole, but it’s so difficult to keep them in one piece, and in my opinion, it makes no difference in how the dish tastes in the end.

      2. While meat and vegetables are cooking, add all ingredients for spicy mayonnaise to a bowl and combine well.

      3.  Slather spicy mayonnaise on bread and add meat. For little ones, just use regular mayonnaise. Top with cheese if desired. Serve with fries or chips.

      Serves 4.
