Remembering Jane RussellBrooke McLay
Sure, Marilyn Monroe worked the screen in her pink dress, crooning “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend,” but it’s Jane Russell a few scenes later, that steals the show. She steps into the witness stand to be sworn in during a favorite scene in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, she declares to the judge with breathy Monroe mimrickry, “why Judge, I never swear,” eyelashes batting and coy lips pierced. My children and I could watch that scene a hundred times. For as much as we love Marilyn, it’s Jane who steals the show. A perfect mixture of pinup girl charm and no-nonsense street smarts, Jane Russell has always been and forever will be one of my favorite classic movie actresses.
Which is why the news of her passing inspired a cupcake decorated on her behalf. Ms. Russell, of course, had ravishing raven-colored hair. But, we put together a cupcake inspired by her stint as a Marilyn Monroe look alike from that favorite scene of ours in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
To commemorate the life of the darling Jane Russell, perhaps you’d like to join us in cupcake making? All you need is a batch of your favorite cupcakes, a bit of vanilla or strawberry frosting, and a handful of Big League Chew bubblegum.
Are you a fan of Jane? We’d love to hear your favorite movie memories with the delightsome Ms. Russell. May she rest in peace.
