This time of year, candy consumption is pretty kid-focused. But why shouldn’t grown ups have a little fun too? Here, sea salt and black pepper bring an unexpected twist to my very favorite candy. I just love the savory notes sea salt and fresh ground black pepper lend to the creamy, buttery, and oh-so-chewy caramel bites. Best of all? You can make these in minutes. Enjoy!
Sea Salt and Black Pepper Caramel Bites
makes 10 bites
20 Werther’s Chewy Caramel Bites, unwrapped
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Line a baking sheet or platter with parchment paper. Set out your sea salt and ground black pepper.
Set up a double boiler, or use two pans that are sized appropriately. Fill the bottom pan with two inches of water, and turn heat to medium-high.
Add the caramels to the top pan, and keep a close eye. After about 7 minutes, they will begin to melt. Carefully stir until the mixture is nice and smooth, about 3 – 4 minutes more.
Drop the melted caramel in tablespoons onto the prepared parchment. As you go, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper, and gently press into the caramel. Cool for 5 minutes, and serve.
