They say that pictures can sometimes tell a story with a thousand words, and I’m pretty sure that body language can do the same. Have you ever noticed that some couples always have their heads leaned and their cheeks pressed together whenever they pose for pictures? Or how one might have their arm around the other’s shoulder or around their waist? Have you ever wondered what these subtle little signs say about their relationship? You’d be surprised!
We’ve compiled a gallery of ten celebrity couples, from Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, and have dissected exactly what their body language might be saying about their relationship. Who is the dominating one? Who likes to be dominated? And most importantly, who gets cheeky with their significant other?
Check out our photos below and let us know what you think!
Body Language 1 of 11
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian 2 of 11
The dominating person puts their hand on the other one's shoulder every so often. Another clue is watching a couple go shopping. See a husband impatiently walking ahead, not wanting to stop every time his wife does? The non-dominating husband would patiently stop beside her instead of striding ahead. In this case, Kim doesn't mind being dominated, and it looks like Kanye doesn't mind hanging around to do the shopping!
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel 3 of 11
These two are N*Sync. I'm sure that their names are being shouted at all different directions, but it looks like this pair is often seen focusing their attention in the same angle when they walk the red carpet. This can be a major cue that the pair is on the same wavelength.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck 4 of 11
A couple standing side by side may appear relaxed and casual initially, but there's often more than meets the eye. They may also be leaning away from one another, or looking in opposite directions, as is the case with Jennifer and Ben here. "Leaning away signals that the relationship is very contrived. It illustrates that they're not connected at all, and one or both may be hiding from the other." That, or maybe these two are just trying to conceal their true feelings for the paparazzi with some major restraint.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale 5 of 11
Now that is what you call getting cheeky! Men often wrap their arms around a woman's waist on the red carpet, but it pays to generally look closer: is his hand on her waist ... or her butt? In this case, it's Gwen who is making the cheeky moves! Good to see these two are still lovey-dovey after almost a decade of marriage.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick 6 of 11
Can you feel the tension? When the man has his arm wrapped around a woman's waist, it could seem, at first glance, as if the duo is a lovey-dovey pair. However, "If the man's fingers are digging into her, that's not a good sign at all. It indicates stiffness and tension between them." It probably doesn't help that they are looking in different directions, too.
Leann Rimes and Eddie Cibrian 7 of 11
How do you know one of the two is lying? Avoiding eye contact, frequent swallowing, and scratching in front of ear and head are some of the nonverbal signs that one is trying to hide something. Alternatively, a poker straight face with zero expressions and minimum speech also shows deceit. If he/she is trying to hide something, they might also shower you with praises. As you can tell, Eddie's body language is very minimal here, and he's most likely just smiling for the camera.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt 8 of 11
Hunched shoulders can indicate insecurity issues in a relationship, but relaxed shoulders that touch can signal a strong bond. Plus, you can just tell that these two are so at ease with each other. They are both relaxed, comfortable, and in love with each other.
Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson 9 of 11
Eric's body language is telling the paparazzi that he's taking care of his lady. He's leading the way while still holding her hand and saying, "I've got you babe." How Prince Charming of him.
Kate Middleton and Prince William 10 of 11
Now, these two might be giving us the wrong signals, as I'm sure they've probably learned how to pose that way in Prince and Princess Etiquette School. Still, it would have been nice for Prince William to give his Duchess a little reassuring hand on her back just to say, "I'm here and we're connected." His hands folded right in front of him say he's either closed down or checked out.
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux 11 of 11
There's tension in her face, meaning she's uncomfortable, and all of her body cues suggest she doesn't feel balanced, safe, or secure with him. It also doesn't help that there's a little space between them, as Justin is leaning away from her rather than towards her.
