The View: Barbara Walters Defend Bill O'Reilly. Why She's RightMara Siegler
Park51, the Muslim community center slated to be built two blocks from the World Trade Center, is a huge point of contention for New Yorkers. As someone who lives here myself and has taken part in these discussions, I know personally how quickly tempers can flare about the subject. But no matter what side you are on, what happened on The View today was wrong.
Bill O’Reilly came on to discuss the subject and started an all out brawl with Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, ending in them eventually standing up and walking off the set. Barbara Walters took the reins and did the right thing.”You have just seen what should not happen. We should be able to have discussions without washing our hands and screaming and walking offstage. I love my colleagues, but that should not have happened,” she said.
And she’s right. The women were yelling so much that you couldn’t even hear what points they were making or follow the conversation. This is not beneficial to anyone. It’s a topic that should be talked about and discussed in a manner that allows for exploration and understanding. Joy and Whoopi know Bill O’Reilly and should have been prepared for his opinions and prepared to handle them accordingly, like grown adult women working in media, instead of children throwing a tantrum.
