Who Shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords? And Why?

Arizona Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords was critically wounded on Saturday morning. In Tuscon while hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event at a local Safeway, a gunman ran up and shot Gabby Giffords and those around her, killing one of her aides.  Gabrielle Giffords was shot at point blank range right in the head, while about eight other people were hit by the the gunman’s bullets including a child. Giffords is currently in the hospital and in undergoing surgery. So who shot Gabrielle Giffords and her entourage?The gunman was described as “in his late teens or early 20s” and “was tackled when he tried to flee the scene. Police confirmed that a young man was in custody in connection with the shooting.”  UPDATE: Another report is saying that the shooter is apparently named Jared Laughner and is twenty-two years old and is a veteran of the Afghanistan War.

She has reportedly had to deal with threats before and her office has been vandalized several times. More details about the gunman will be coming shortly.

Obama spoke of the shooting saying. “We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society,” Obama said. “I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.”

Gabrielle Giffords got married to astronaut Mark E. Kelly back in January 2007.
