Zahra Clare Baker: Missing Child Case Turns To Homicide. Did The Stepmom Kill Her?Mara Siegler
A missing North Carolina girl named Zahra Clare Baker went missing on Saturday. She was just ten years old and had bone cancer that left her with a prosthetic leg and hearing aids. Police initially thought this was a kidnapping, but now believe the family may have killed her.
No one has seen the child outside the home in months and many who knew her said her life was miserable and that she was rarely let out of her room.
But that’s not the fishiest part. The girl’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, confessed to writing a ransom note found at the house where the girl lived. She’s been charged with felony obstruction of justice in the case. Police dogs have also detected the smell of human remains on her car.
Elisa was arrested Sunday on unrelated charges including communicating threats, writing worthless checks, larceny and driving with a revoked license. Both her and her husband are being investigated.
