Every parent strives to make sure their kids have what they need to live happy, full, and healthy lives. Everything from a roof over their head, lessons to live by, rides to soccer, affection, discipline, and proper nutrition.
Many of us are fortunate enough to have the means to provide our kids with all the many things they need. It’s easy to take for granted that we have access to healthy foods to help our kids grow to reach their full potential, do their best in school and in life. But for many American families struggling with hunger, having a regular flow of basic nutrition can be a daily challenge.
From working families, to seniors to single mothers, more than 12.5 million Americans struggle with food insecurity. In fact, 103.9 million US households are food insecure, and 80 percent of those households contain children. Families in need regularly turn to food banks like Feeding America to supplement their food supply, many of which rely on donations of food and money to maintain their inventory. Unfortunately, there is not always enough supply to meet the increasing demand.
Milk, with its nine essential nutrients, including eight grams of protein in every eight ounce glass, is one of the most requested nutrition staples at food banks, yet is rarely available because it’s seldom donated.
Milk is naturally nutrient-rich, and contains three of the top nutrients most likely to be missing in the American diet – calcium, vitamin D and potassium.
Still, food banks receive access to approximately only one gallon of milk per person, per year. The reason: Milk just doesn’t come to mind as something to donate because it is perishable, leaving millions of families without access to its benefits.
To help raise awareness and facilitate more donations of protein-packed milk, Feeding America has teamed up with dairy farmers and milk companies to launch The Great American Milk Drive, making it as simple as possible to donate milk to your community. By visiting the Great American Milk Drive site, you can easily donate gallons of milk to families in need in a few clicks. Donations deliver milk to families in need in your community.
Since April, the Great American Milk Drive has delivered over 87 thousand gallons of milk to food banks that serve over 37 million families nationwide.
There’s still plenty of time to make your donation to help families in need. Simply head to http://milklife.com/give to make your donation, and be sure to share the Milk Gap facts to help spread awareness in your community.
