10 Tips to Healthier Teeth With Braces

{not really LOL}

Hannah is my third child to have braces. I blame my husband’s small mouth gene and my big tooth gene. Our orthodontist loves us!!

You have to make sure your kids take very good care of their teeth when they have braces. Braces make it extremely easy for food to remain trapped and plaque to accumulate — which can lead to tooth discoloration and gingivitis.

Here are 10 tips we’ve noticed through the years that might help YOUR child have Healthier Teeth with Braces.

  1. One of the greatest ways to keep teeth healthy with braces is rinsing with a mouthwash like Listerine. Rinsing dislodges food particles which can become stuck in the braces, plus the rinses have flouride in them which strengthens teeth. And now there are all kinds of flavors and types of rinses which make kids want to use them.
  2. Flossing with braces can be tricky. You can buy flossing sticks which are made specifically to be used with braces.
  3. Avoid foods that will break or weaken braces — like, chewy foods and candies, hard food or gum.
  4. Avoid sugary liquids like soda. Sugary liquids and foods will cause more plaque and get stuck in cracks and along the gum line.
  5. Have your child brush for at least 2 minutes and get the brush under the wires.
  6. When the braces are first put on, your child will have some mouth pain. To relieve this pain, you can have your child rinse their mouth with warm salt water. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously.
  7. Also, the wires from the braces can irritate your child’s mouth, you can buy wax to put over the wires.
  8. There are also toothbrushes specifically made for braces. My daughter brings a toothbrush to school and brushes after lunch to keep her smile looking clean at school.
  9. And in case brushing and rinsing doesn’t dislodge stubborn food, there is a tool specifically designed to help people keep their smiles clean.
  10. If your kids play sports and have braces, be sure to invest in a mouthguard to protect their teeth with braces.
